Oscar Pistorius, who has been charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, will officially learn whether his application for bail is approved or denied on Feb. 22. But right now, the only thing prosecutors are worried about is the diminishing strength of their case.
Oscar Pistorius Isn’t The Only One Facing Murder Charges — Detective Hilton Botha Is Too!
That’s all because of the news that Hilton Botha, the detective who led the investigation in Oscar’s Pretoria, South Africa home, is being charged for the attempted murder of seven people. The charges specifically stem from a confrontation in 2011 during which Hilton and several other police officers opened fire on a taxi that was carrying seven passengers. The group of police officers were allegedly drunk during the confrontation, though Hilton has denied it.
On Feb. 21, the South African investigator told the court that the charges had been dropped, but he was only half right — prosecutor Gerrie Nel confirmed that ”the case was originally dropped but has been reinstated.”
Obviously, an alleged attempted murderer investigating an alleged premeditated murderer doesn’t look good for the prosecution’s case against Oscar. But during the Olympian’s bail hearing on Feb. 21, the case began to split at the seams even more due to mistakes by Hilton — who is now the former lead investigator on the case.
The Prosecution Against Oscar Pistorius Has ‘Disastrous Shortcomings’
In court, Hilton admitted that he initially contaminated the crime scene by wearing “unprotected shoes.” His accounts were also shaky at best. First saying he had an account from a witness 600 meters away, he later changed that estimate to 300 meters.
Detective Botha’s continued obvious negligence — he had still not obtained Reeva’s financial and telephone records, and did not fully investigate Oscar’s alleged ownership of a home in Italy — was just the cherry on top of horrible day for the police department and the prosecutors.
“The poor quality of evidence presented by chief investigating officer Botha exposed disastrous shortcomings in the state’s case,” said Oscar’s defense attorney, Barry Roux.
Oscar’s chances for bail are now looking much brighter due to these mistakes. But unfortunately it is going to be a long, long time before this whole mess really gets sorted out.
