BBVA Compass Stadium, the new home of the Houston Dynamo, has received LEED Silver certification.
Some of the sustainable design features that helped the stadium achieve certification include reducing water use by 41 percent, reducing energy use by about 20 percent and providing preferred parking spaces for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, the facility’s management said in a Dec. 6 statement.
GreenStar Recycling and BBVA Compass have also started the "Building a Better Planet" program, which encourages recycling during games and throughout the community.
The stadium is the first sports facility in Houston to receive LEED Silver certification for new construction.
Barclays Center, a multipurpose indoor arena in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Major League Soccer’s Jeld-Wen Field in Portland, Ore., are other such facilities to receive the designation.
The $60 million stadium, which seats 22,000 spectators, opened in May.
