
Breaking the sire bond may cause short-term damage to Damon & Elena as a couple, but it's the only way they can be happy together down the road.
Let me begin by saying I'm just as supportive of Damon (
Ian Somerhalder) and Elena's (
Nina Dobrev) relationship as you are — assuming you set sail on on the good ship "Delena," that is. But after re-watching the Dec. 6 episode of
The Vampire Diaries, I believe that not only
should Damon break the sire bond, but he kind of
needs to break it.
If Damon maintains his sire bond, no matter how much Elena
insists that she wants him to, there will always be naysayers like Caroline (
Candice Accola) who
refuse to believe Elena's feelings are genuine. Even though Tyler (
Michael Trevino) — who's basically the poster-child for siring in Mystic Falls — said point-blank that "the bond affects how you act, not how you feel," I doubt everyone else will be easily convinced. More importantly,
Damon won't be easily convinced. During his final scene with Elena, he said the only thing would make him happy would be knowing that she returned his love for her — and that was
after she explained that the bond doesn't effect emotions. Damon, while
